DIY: Easy Fitted Maxi Skirt

 I was recently at Joann's Fabric, and I got this yard of knit fabric for $5, in a awesome print! As you can tell from the picture above, I made a maxi skirt from it. I think it turned out really well, and it takes like 20 minutes to make. Want to see how? Just keep scrolling.

I made a measurement of my hips, and used that for piece A. Notice A is folded over while B is not. For the sake of  you understanding the pictures, I've labeled the two pieces of fabric, I had to cut. 

 Then I cut.

 I turned B the other way, laid it over A right sides together, pinned, and sewed. This way the fabric of A is going to stretch horizontal and B is vertical. It is preferable to just buy more fabric and have it all stretching horizontally, and save yourself the extra step. But I'm a cheap-skate.      

 I did wind up cutting some fabric off the bottom, but don't cut off too much, you need it to be longer than you think.

 I cut off some fabric to make the top waist area smaller. This will help it stay up, when you where it.

 Then I sereged around the entire thing. You can also hem it with a standard sewing machine. 

 I pinned down the two sides together (leaving a slit at the bottom)....

 ..and straight stitched, with my sewing machine. 

This is what it should look like. Yes, that was really all it takes.

I love how it turned out, it's so comfortable!

DIY: Girl's Pillowcase Maxi Skirt

Recently my little sister (the one seen above) asked if I could make a maxi skirt for her, out of a pillow case. I had never done it before, but I decided to give it a try. I thought it turned out pretty well and my little sister loves it! So I thought I would share how to make one. 

Okay, so first off, this is an knit material pillow case. It's also pretty long and thin, which works out because so is my sister. You could make this skirt with a cotton pillow case, just know it will look different. You can see from the picture, that I cut off the closed off end of the pillow case, and left the hem on the other end alone.

Next I cut some elastic, a little smaller than the circumference of her waist, and pined.  

Then I sewed it up......

.....and went back over it.

Then I opened it up and...

....sewed a rectangle over it.

Next I pinned my elastic and fabric in fourths. 

And sewed around, stretching as I went.
